The beauty business: cutthroat, entrancing enthralling, and sometimes more lucrative than you could ever imagine. But in an industry that both punishing and competitive, should you go for it? We've outlined a few ways to identify if you should chase the dream and how you can get started on creating and selling your own makeup masterpieces.
1. Your Following
Do you have a healthy following on Instagram or Youtube? Are you tinkering and experimenting, but not ready to take the next step? The beauty business may be for you if your social media accounts are already exploding with details on beauty trends, tips and tricks, and maybe even recipes. If your followers want to know more about what you have to say, then you are already halfway there!
2. Your Expertise
Are you certified in anything beauty-related? While you might not have a related degree, you can still find a huge range of certificates and online courses that can help propel your career. A few online sources you should check out include Udemy, which offers a huge range of courses. In addition, you may have hands-on experience doing all of your friend's hair for years or you could have experience in chemistry physical fitness, sciences, or baking. All of these skills can help you succeed in the beauty business - you just have to think outside the box and market yourself well.
3. Your Depth
Being a jack-of-all-trades in the beauty industry isn't necessarily ideal, and it's totally OK if you spend almost all of your time perfecting a smokey-eye or cooking up lip balms in your kitchen. A great place to start is to perfect one aspect of makeup and then create hype surrounding your expertise, the rest will come later.

Have you saved a little something for a business venture? Do you have pin money from a hobby? Sometimes that side cash is enough to take the plunge into the beauty business. Think about who you look up to, business-wise. Are they the movers and shakers in beauty? Have they built a successful brand from scratch? Consider asking them to mentor you - because everyone could use some guidance from time-to-time, and it's the best way to get your business off the ground.
6. Your Passion
If you can’t imagine your life without the beauty industry, then it’s your calling. Life is too short to not pursue your goals, even if that means sacrificing things along the way or being nearly paralyzed with fear before you start. Your friends and family want you to succeed, and you don’t want to look back and wonder if you should have gone for it. The time is now.
